Albania launches 24/7 traffic monitoring on major highways with smart camera system

Four of Albania’s busiest national highways — the Tirana-Durrës, Durrës-Rrogozhinë, Rrogozhinë-Fier, and Fier-Vlorë segments — will now be monitored 24 hours a day by a new smart camera system that automatically detects speeding violations and alerts police and emergency services in case of accidents.

Why is this important: The launch of the National Traffic Monitoring Center marks the first phase of a wider government plan to digitally oversee Albania’s entire road network. The initial 200 kilometers under surveillance will expand to cover all 3,650 km of national roads under the authority of the Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH). The system aims to reduce road accidents, ease police workload, and speed up emergency response.

Context: Intelligent cameras positioned along these corridors will track vehicle speeds and traffic conditions in real time. In the event of a violation, data will be sent directly to the State Police. If an accident occurs, the system will automatically notify the National Emergency Service to dispatch help immediately.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said the monitoring system is part of a broader Smart City initiative supported by a partnership with the United Arab Emirates. Cameras and AI-powered tools will eventually be installed across all city roads to build a comprehensive, real-time traffic management infrastructure.

“This isn’t just about road safety — it’s a digital transformation of how our emergency services, police, and civil protection agencies function together,” Rama said.

What’s next: The government is planning a full reform of emergency response systems — combining road safety, medical response, and civil emergencies under a single unified digital platform. With artificial intelligence integrated into the network, officials say all data on traffic conditions, violations, and emergencies will be collected and processed in real time to improve decision-making and intervention times.
