Albania advances further on its path to EU membership
Albania has made progress in its EU membership negotiations by opening discussions on Chapter VI, focused on foreign relations. During a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), ambassadors from all 27 EU countries encouraged Albania to align its foreign policy with EU standards.
Why is this important: This step is significant as Chapter VI is crucial for Albania’s integration, focusing on foreign policy and international alignment. It reflects trust in Albania’s reforms and highlights its role as a stabilizing force in the Western Balkans. Progress on this chapter strengthens its European perspective and long-term goals.
Context: Albania began formal negotiations on October 15 by opening Chapter I, addressing fundamental principles. Chapter I is opened first and closed last under the revised EU methodology, making it a key measure of overall progress. Advancing to Chapter VI shows Albania’s steady alignment with EU norms.
The Hungarian EU Presidency will now work on a common position for the next Intergovernmental Conference with Albania. This milestone signals Albania’s continued commitment to reforms and its ambition for European integration, widely supported by its citizens.
