Albania announces winners of 300 MW hybrid photovoltaic auction
The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Belinda Balluku, announced the winners of Albania’s 300 MW hybrid photovoltaic auction, marking a significant stride towards energy independence and sustainability.
Why is this relevant
The auction reaffirms the country’s commitment to becoming a net energy exporter and establishes new standards for transparent and competitive renewable energy tenders. It is the largest of its kind in Albania, solidifying the nation’s position as a leader in renewable energy development within the Western Balkans and Energy Community.
Context
Eight consortiums secured bids totaling 283.93 MW at an average price of 51.3 euros per megawatt-hour. Voltalia was named as a reserve company for a 72 MW capacity in Karavasta. Unlike previous initiatives, this ‘hybrid’ auction does not involve direct state asset engagement, in contrast to projects like Karavasta (where Albania receives 50% of production) and Spitalla.
The strategic importance of this auction lies in diversifying Albania’s energy portfolio, which currently relies heavily on hydroelectric power. Recent successes in wind and solar energy auctions, including record-setting prices, highlight Albania’s growing role in regional energy security.
International partnerships with BERZH and SECO have played a crucial role in adopting global best practices for energy development and storage technologies, ensuring Albania meets stringent European standards.
