Albania and Germany work together to forge alliance against climate risks
The agreement, signed by Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, and German Ambassador Karl Bergner in Tirana, focuses on empowering Albania’s Meteorological Service by improving the National Meteorological Service for accurate weather forecasts and warnings. Additionally, ALBAdapt will establish a more robust Early Warning System to prepare communities and institutions for natural disasters, while supporting municipalities in adopting sustainable, climate-resilient solutions.
Thes initiative is part of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Regional Climate Partnership, aimed at fostering collaboration in climate protection across the region. With substantial support from Germany, Switzerland, and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Albania is set to receive over €36 million to strengthen its resilience to climate change impacts.
Albania, identified by the German Embassy as one of Europe’s most vulnerable countries to climate risks, faces increasing occurrences of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, floods, extreme temperatures, droughts, and forest fires. The lack of a reliable hydrometeorological service intensifies these challenges, impacting approximately 50,000 Albanians annually.
