Albania aims to host Formula 1 race in 2030 with completion of Elbasan Automotor Park

Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced the completion of the final project design for the Elbasan Automotor Park, developed in collaboration with a team appointed by Formula 1’s executive director, Stefano Domenicali. Rama also revealed Albania’s ambition to host its first Formula 1 race in 2030, a goal he described as bold and previously unimaginable.
Why is this important: If successful, Albania would become a host country for Formula 1, an event that could generate significant economic growth and enhance the nation’s global visibility. Beyond the race, the project aims to integrate Albania into the international motorsport economy, contributing to tourism, hospitality, and infrastructure development.
Context: The construction of the 600,000 square meter Auto Motor Park began in 2023 and is expected to be completed within three years. The park will feature a certified FIA race track, a karting area for children’s races, and a road safety training center. Additionally, it will include the country’s first Retro Museum showcasing Albania’s automotive history.
According to government representatives, the goal is not just to host a Formula 1 race but to embed motorsport into Albania’s economic landscape.
“This project is about the economy, not just car racing,” said a government official. “The project will create a year-round destination.”
Global impact and visibility: Officials highlighted the economic scale of Formula 1, with annual global revenues reaching €250 billion. Events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix attract 300,000 spectators on-site and more than 1 billion viewers worldwide.
“This would be a massive advertisement for Albania,” said Arbjan Mazniku, Minister of State for Local Governance.
What else: The development of the Automotor Park will include a new waterfront promenade designed for cycling and recreational activities. By combining sporting events, training programs, and leisure facilities, the park is expected to become a major destination for both Albanians and international visitors.
While the vision of hosting a Formula 1 race remains ambitious, Rama expressed confidence in Albania’s ability to achieve it.
“The ambition is for Albania to host a Formula 1 race in 2030,” Rama said.
Further progress on construction and certifications from FIA will determine whether Albania can turn this ambitious goal into reality.
