Albania adopts Albergo Diffuso model to develop sustainable tourism through the modernization of tradition
Kruja stands out as a pioneer of the Albergo Diffuso model in Albania, being the first to introduce this innovative tourism concept in the country. Nestled amidst the historic and authentic houses near Kruja Castle, accommodations offer an immersive urban experience, inviting visitors to live like locals. Guests can participate in artisan and cooking classes featuring traditional dishes prepared by locals, as well as a variety of cultural and nature tours.
Context
As part of a government program aimed at revitalizing and rejuvenating 100 villages with distinct cultural and historical heritage across Albania and transforming them into tourist destinations, experts from the Albergo Diffuso Association have been invited to assess locations for their suitability to adopt this hospitality model.
The Albergo Diffuso model aims to promote tourism in rural villages and historic town centers while preserving their unique charm. This approach represents a distinctive pathway to sustainable tourism development that harmonizes with local communities and environments. The model only requires the willingness and cooperation of village residents to open their homes for tourism in a coordinated manner, allowing visitors to experience an authentic Albanian stay.
Alongside government efforts to support the development of agritourism across rural Albania through initiatives such as the “Revitalization Bonus,” Albergo Diffuso represents the best hope for developing a quality tourist offering while preserving Albania’s rich heritage, which has been endangered in recent decades due to rapid development and abandonment in rural areas.
