Lea Ypi elected as first Albanian member of The British Academy

Professor Lea Ypi has been elected as the first Albanian member of the prestigious British Academy. The British Academy announced today the election of 86 leading scholars from the humanities and social sciences to its Fellowship.

Renowned for her research on justice, democracy, and socialism, Professor Ypi explores the intersection of political philosophy and practice, focusing on nationalism, migration, and the role of intellectuals in public life. Her academic contributions have been pivotal in political theory and global public discourse.

Professor Ypi is the author of several influential books including “Global Justice and Avant-Garde Political Agency” (2012), “The Meaning of Partisanship” (2016), and “Free: Coming of Age at the End of History” (2020). Her works have been translated into multiple languages and have garnered international acclaim, earning her numerous awards.

Professor Ypi holds positions as Professor of Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as Honorary Professor of Philosophy at the Australian National University. She graduated in Philosophy and Literature from La Sapienza University and completed her PhD at the European University Institute.

Established in 1902, the British Academy is the UK’s national institution for the humanities and social sciences. It promotes research excellence, influences public policy, and supports scholars through research projects, fellowships, and global events.
