Vetëvendosje enters December 28 elections in coalition with Guxo, Alternativa and Demochristian Party

The Vetëvendosje Movement will compete in Kosovo’s December 28 snap parliamentary elections as part of a coalition, joining forces with three smaller parties: Guxo, Alternativa, and the Albanian Demochristian Party. The alliance is officially registered with the Central Election Commission (KQZ) under the name Koalicioni Lëvizja Vetëvendosje.

Why is this important: The decision signals Vetëvendosje’s strategy to broaden its support base after failing to secure enough seats to form a government following the February 9 elections. By allying with like-minded parties, Vetëvendosje aims to consolidate the center-left and pro-reform vote.

Election landscape: Other major parties—PDK, LDK, and AAK—have opted to run independently in these elections. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Initiative (Nisma), which had previously run in coalition with AAK, has registered to compete alone this time.

In total, 23 political entities have submitted their intention to participate in the upcoming vote.

CEC statement: Valmir Elezi, spokesperson for the KQZ, clarified that once registered, coalitions are binding until the certification of election results. The deadline for parties and coalitions to submit candidate lists for parliament is December 7.

“According to the rules, coalitions remain unchanged until the elections are completed and certified,” Elezi stated.

Background: The snap elections were triggered after Vetëvendosje, despite winning the largest share of votes in the February 9 elections, was unable to secure enough parliamentary support to form a government. As a result, Kosovo is heading to the polls again on December 28 in hopes of producing a more stable governing majority.
