Albania, Italy, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia facilitate Military Mobility in Corridor VIII

In a significant move aimed at enhancing military mobility along the Pan-European Corridor VIII, Albania, Italy, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia signed a landmark Letter of Intent during the NATO Summit. The agreement aims to ensure greater flexibility for military movements across their territories, supporting NATO’s agenda of deterrence and defense in the Euro-Atlantic area.

The document, signed by Albanian Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi, Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, Bulgarian Minister of Defense Atanas Zaprianov, and North Macedonian Minister of Defense Vlado Misajlovski, commits the countries to take all necessary measures to facilitate rapid and unhindered movement of NATO forces. This includes swift deployment from the Adriatic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and deeper into the Balkans when necessary.

The idea for such a document, guaranteeing mobility across the countries affected by Pan-European Corridor VIII, was proposed by Albania, which led the negotiation and coordination efforts. Italy, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia actively participated and committed to finalizing this initiative during the Washington Summit proceedings.

The signing of the Letter of Intent supports Albania’s vision for Corridor VIII and its master project to construct a NATO Naval Base in Porto Romano, serving as a key gateway to the Western Balkans and beyond, into the Mediterranean Sea.

This Letter of Intent will enhance the visibility of joint projects and their geostrategic importance for the entire region.
