Wildfires rage across Albania as Lura and Dukat burn for days

Wildfires continue to ravage several areas across Albania, with major blazes still active in Lura National Park, the mountainous region of Dukat in Vlorë, and Zerqan in Bulqiza. Despite days of firefighting, limited personnel and rugged terrain are hampering efforts to contain the flames.

Why is this important: The fire in Lura has been burning for five days near the iconic “Lake of Flowers” area, threatening young pine forests. In Dukat, flames are approaching the Llogara National Park, raising fears of wider ecological damage. Authorities confirm 36 hectares of vegetation and over 2,500 olive trees have already been destroyed.

Context: Only 12 firefighters and park rangers are currently deployed in Lura, while 28 fire engines and 237 personnel are engaged across the country. In Dukat, 8 firefighters, local workers, and 20 soldiers are trying to stop the blaze from spreading. Civil Emergency Services have confirmed 18 fire incidents in the last 24 hours, with three still active.

One suspected case of arson has been reported in Lezhë, where a fire near an electrical substation is believed to have been intentionally set. In another case, a man was detained in Poliçan for allegedly starting the fire that destroyed 2,500 olive trees.

What’s next: With high fire risk levels expected in Fier and Vlorë and dry conditions persisting, Civil Protection have urged citizens to avoid any actions that could spark new fires and to report any blazes immediately. Authorities warn that intervention efforts may be prolonged due to terrain and weather conditions.
