Museums and archaeological sites open 7 days a week for tourist season

All museums and archaeological sites in Albania are to remain open every day and with extended hours until the end of the tourist season in October 31. The growing number of tourists visiting the country has led to a significant influx of visitors to museums and archaeological sites, prompting the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation to issue a new directive according to which archaeological parks and museums are to operate with extended hours, seven days a week.

The new directive was implemented first at the Durrës Amphitheater, one of the country’s main attractions, where visitors are being served from 09.00 AM to 07.00 PM. In the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gjirokastra, which has grown into one of the foremost destinations in Albania, the measures will cover national sites as well as municipal museums.

Due to its strategic location at one of the crossroads of ancient civilizations, its rugged landscapes and relatively untouched regions, Albania has a wealth of well-preserved historical and archeological sites, spanning thousands of years of history, from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. These sites are expected to attract approximately 1.7 million visitors in 2024.

Why is this relevant

Albania’s tourism sector has experienced breakneck growth over the past couple of years. The Government has tried to keep up with this welcome development by taking steps to enhance the country’s touristic offer. Improving the quality of service and accessibility to attractions like archaeological sites, parks, and museums has been one of the main focuses of this effort.

Other areas where serious efforts are being made to improve the quality of the tourist experience in Albania, involve training personnel to provide information and assistance to visitors, investing in maintenance and new technologies.
