Over 700 rare works on display in new Mediterranean history exhibition in Tirana

Over 700 rare historical works, including original books, manuscripts, maps, and engravings dating from the 14th to 19th centuries, will go on public display as part of a landmark exhibition titled “Mediterranean Memory – From Antiquity to Modern Times,” opening June 18 at the National Library of Albania.

The exhibition, which runs until July 18, offers a rare glimpse into the rich and diverse heritage of the Mediterranean world, featuring highlights from the Library’s prestigious archival collection.

Prime Minister Edi Rama described the exhibition as “a unique window into our shared history,” noting the inclusion of works by Homer, Aristotle, Plutarch, as well as Ottoman maps, Venetian publications, and insights into monotheistic faiths, great travelers, and geographers.

Why is this important: The exhibition is part of the cultural program leading up to Tirana’s designation as Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2025, a year-long celebration of cross-cultural heritage and dialogue in the region.

Organizers invite the public to explore this extraordinary collection, which offers historical context, artistic beauty, and a renewed appreciation for centuries of Mediterranean exchange.
