While Albania’s Riviera and its main historical sites draw most of the attention and the largest crowds of tourists, there are numerous other, off the beaten track areas that are certainly worth spending a few days visiting, such as Gramsh, a mountainous municipality and town in southeastern Albania, located approximately 100 kilometers from Tirana.

Gramsh is home to just around 40,000 residents spread over an area of no more than 700 square kilometers. Despite its modest size, the region boasts amazing natural attractions.

The Kabashi Cave

Among the most unique caves in Albania and perhaps one of the most stunning in the Balkans, Kabashi Cave is situated near the village of Kabash, 28 kilometers from the town of Gramsh at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. Formed by limestone rocks from the Upper Cretaceous period, the cave stretches approximately 120 meters in length. The cave is not easy to locate without a guide. It features a small entrance of only 1 square meter, but after 4 or 5 meters it expands into a cavity the size of a football pitch. Yet to be fully explored, the known section forms a true labyrinth adorned with numerous rare stalactites and stalagmites. Local legends speak of a hidden treasure within, yet to be discovered.

The Holta Canyon

One of the best known in Albania, and the must go to destination for many an Instagram influencer, Holta Canyon, shaped by the erosion of the Holta River, stretches over 3 kilometers with cliffs reaching heights of 100-150 meters and water depths of up to 2-3 meters. The canyon features rugged cliffs dotted with karstic caves and thermal pools. Cold mountain streams flow on one side, while just meters away, warm thermal waters emerge with their characteristic colors and scents. Nearby, visitors can find restaurants offering typical local dishes. Its vibrant colors make it an unforgettable natural destination just an hour and 30 minutes away from Tirana.

The Lilies Lake

Also known as the Oak Tree Lake, the Lilies Lake is located near Lenie village at an altitude of 1105 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking panoramic views. This glacial lake spans approximately 800 meters in length and 400 meters in width, teeming with rich flora and fauna, notably large water lilies known as symbols of life, passion, love, and purity. Various fish species provide a magnificent spectacle as they appear and disappear amidst the lilies. The lake is surrounded by a 12-hectare pine forest, forming a fascinating aquatic and forest ecosystem. Spring and summer are the best seasons to visit this natural wonder.

The Sotira Waterfall

The Sotiras Waterfall sourced from Mount Tomorr, cascades down 100 meters and is located at a distance of approximately 22 kilometers from Gramsh. Accessible by a one-hour hike from Sotira village, from which it takes its name, the waterfall varies in height from 5 to 20 meters. The picturesque backdrop of the cascading water amidst lush forests and maple trees creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. The area around the waterfall is rich in biodiversity, featuring beech, hornbeam, ash, and even wild chestnut trees, a rarity in its wild form.
