Albin Kurti submits formal resignation as Prime Minister of Kosovo to assume MP mandate

Caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti has submitted his formal resignation to the Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, along with the resignation of his entire cabinet. The move clears the way for Kurti to take his seat as a Member of Parliament in the newly elected legislature.
Why this is important: Kurti’s resignation formalizes the government’s transition following the end of its four-year mandate on March 23. It also fulfills the legal requirement for him to begin a new term as MP.
Context: In his letter, Kurti confirmed that the government has been operating in caretaker status since March 23. He stated that the resignation took effect on March 27, the date he submitted his declaration to the Central Election Commission and made a public statement confirming it.
“Since March 23, when the full four-year term of our government ended, the government has been in caretaker status,” Kurti wrote. “In line with the Constitution and applicable laws and based on the declaration I submitted and that was accepted by the CEC on March 27, I have effectively resigned along with the cabinet.”
Kurti added that the resignation was submitted in order to fulfill the requirement of being sworn in as a deputy in Kosovo’s ninth legislature.
“For the purpose of taking the oath as a Member of Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo, I am officially forwarding my resignation from the executive post, effective from the aforementioned date, as stipulated by the Constitution and the applicable laws,” he wrote.
The resignation was delivered to Konjufca and comes at a moment of institutional transition in Kosovo. It clears the path for the new parliamentary term and the eventual formation of the next government.
Kurti’s letter confirms the continuation of his political role within the legislature, while signaling that the caretaker government remains in place until a new cabinet is confirmed.
