Albania blocks TikTok on mobile networks, works to implement full ban

TikTok, the popular social media platform, is no longer accessible through mobile networks in Albania as of today. However, users can still access the app via Wi-Fi connections, with authorities stating that the next step will be a complete ban on fixed-line networks.

Why is this important: The ban marks the latest move in Albania’s efforts to address concerns over cybersecurity risks and the app’s impact on young users. The government has cited the need for stronger content filtering to protect minors and prevent the spread of harmful material.

Context: According to Saimir Kapllani, Director of Risk and Control at the National Authority for Cybersecurity, the first phase of the ban was completed at midnight, restricting access on all mobile data networks.

The government is working with internet service providers to implement additional technical measures to enforce the ban nationwide. Authorities have also warned users, particularly parents, against using free VPN services to bypass the ban. Prime Minister Edi Rama and cybersecurity experts caution that VPNs pose significant privacy risks and can expose users to hacking attempts.

Conditions for TikTok’s return: The government has stated that the ban could be lifted if TikTok implements stronger content moderation tools. One specific demand is the introduction of Albanian language filters to detect and prevent the spread of violent or harmful content.

Authorities estimate that implementing a complete ban on both mobile and fixed networks will take approximately one week.
