Athens Job Fair to connect Albanian emigrants with employment and investment opportunities

At a major Job Fair in Athens on March 2, over 100 leading Albanian businesses will come together to offer employment opportunities to Albanian professionals and emigrants living in Greece. The event is part of a government initiative aimed at addressing Albania’s growing labor shortage while encouraging skilled Albanians abroad to explore opportunities in their home country.

Why is this important: Since the early 1990s, a large Albanian community has settled in Greece, with unofficial estimates suggesting that over 500,000 Albanians contribute to the Greek economy. Many initially emigrated illegally, but over time, they have obtained Greek residency and citizenship.

At the same time, Albania faces an ongoing demographic decline, with emigration reducing the country’s workforce—a trend that is becoming increasingly concerning. Key sectors such as agriculture and tourism have been hit hardest, struggling to find qualified workers. The government is now taking steps to reverse this trend by:

  • Encouraging Albanians abroad to return through tailored employment programs.
  • Providing tax incentives for investment in key sectors such as tourism and agritourism.
  • Connecting professionals with high-demand industries through initiatives like the Athens Job Fair.

Context: The Prime Minister himself will be present at the Athens Job Fair. Participants will include employment agencies, business chambers, innovators, entrepreneurs, promoters, corporations, public institutions, and other key stakeholders from Albania.

A dedicated website, migrant.puna.gov.al, has been launched to provide Albanian emigrants with detailed information about job openings and sector-specific demands in tourism, agriculture, and construction.

The fair will feature panel discussions with industry experts, offering attendees the opportunity to expand their professional networks through dedicated networking sessions, as well as gain insights into job market trends and employment opportunities in Albania.

What’s next: The Athens Job Fair is expected to be the first of many similar initiatives, as the Albanian government plans to make these job fairs an annual tradition in countries with large Albanian emigrant communities.
