Two days of National Mourning declared in honor of Ismail Kadare
Tuesday and Wednesday have been declared days of National Mourning in Albania in honor of Ismail Kadare, Albania’s best known writer who died on July 1.
Wednesday has also been declared a day of mourning in Kosovo by decision of President Vjosa Osmani.
Flags will be flying at half-mast in all state institutions and homage will be paid in the hall of National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Tirana. 1 minute silence will be held throughout Albania at 13.00 on July 3.
The writer’s death has caused pain and grief throughout Albania and among Albanian communities the world over. While he was famous throughout the world as one of his generation’s best writers, having been translated into 45 languages, among Albanians he enjoyed a respect and affection that was reserved to no other living Albanian.
