€75.5 million loan by IBRD supports Albania’s efforts to manage waste and protect aquatic environments
The Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Finance approved a significant €75.5 million loan agreement with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the implementation of the “Clean Environment and Resilient Capacity, Blue Sea” project.
Why is this relevant
The project, presented to the Parliamentary Commission by Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment Almira Xhembulla, aims to reduce pollution from land-based sources into the waters of selected areas of Albania’s southwestern coastline. It comes as Albania strives to integrate circular economy principles into its national waste management system, as outlined in the new National Integrated Waste Management Plan for 2020–2035.
The plan emphasizes investment in both grey and green infrastructure, alongside efforts to foster behavioral changes among the population. This holistic approach aims not only to enhance municipal waste management practices, including the handling of plastic waste, but also to reduce water pollution in critical waterways such as the Vjosa River. Such measures it is hoped will also bolster economic growth in the region by boosting tourism, and potentially increasing local employment opportunities.
By focusing on sustainable management practices for solid municipal waste and polluted waters, Albania anticipates long-term environmental benefits. This strategic alignment with EU waste management standards positions Albania to address current challenges effectively while fostering a more resilient and sustainable future for its communities and natural resources.
