Severe weather disrupts life in Albania: snow, power outages, and travel delays
Albania faced widespread disruptions over the weekend as heavy snow and rain gripped the country. Roads have been blocked, ferries canceled, and power outages reported across several regions. Key affected areas include Dibra, Kukës, and Elbasan, where snow depth has exceeded 40 cm in some locations.
Transport disruptions:
· The Durres-Bari ferry route is suspended, while other routes operate normally.
· Major roads, including parts of the Arbër Highway and Qafë Bualli, are impassable without winter equipment.
Police urge caution and advise against non-essential travel in affected areas.
Energy and utilities: Power outages have hit Dibra, Elbasan, and rural areas in Shkodër and Kukës. Emergency teams are on the ground to restore electricity. OSHEE reports 43 damaged feeders and over 1,500 personnel deployed nationwide.
Flood risks: Heavy rain caused flooding in Vlora, submerging key streets and threatening homes. Hydrovore stations are on high alert to manage water levels and prevent further damage.
Looking ahead: Weather conditions are expected to improve early next week, bringing relief to affected areas. In the meantime, police and emergency services are coordinating efforts to address blocked roads and stranded vehicles.
