Shortly after opposition leader Sali Berisha publicly claimed that Socialist MP Pandeli Majko was being investigated for electoral interference, SPAK publicly dismissed the allegations and confirmed that Majko is not under investigation. SPAK clarified that no complaints or criminal proceedings are registered against Majko in its records.
Why is this important: The clarification comes amid heightened political tension in Albania, where accusations of corruption are frequently weaponized. Berisha’s claims sparked questions about potential misuse of public funds for electoral purposes by one of SP’s most senior and popular figures. SPAK’s unusually fast reaction has put the concerns at rest but raises questions on why the Structure has not reacted with the same speed on the endless list of other allegations issued by Berisha and other opposition figures. On Monday, following his court mandated appearance before SPAK, Berisha addressed a protest organized by his supporters on SPAK’s doorstep where he issued a spew of very serious accusations against SPAK and other senior SP figures. There has been no reaction yet from SPAK.
Context: In one of his conferences, Berisha claimed that Majko was wiretapped by the Albanian Intelligence Service (SHISH) while allegedly engaging in illicit practices. Berisha accused Majko of inflating public project costs to finance vote-buying during his role as Socialist Party coordinator for Kukës.
In response to these claims, Majko formally requested SHISH to confirm or deny whether he was wiretapped, asserting his right as an MP to seek clarity about accusations tied to his duties. “Please confirm if such wiretapping exists and provide access to any related information,” Majko wrote in his official letter to SHISH.
What did SPAK say: “Following a thorough review of the Criminal Complaints and Protocol Registries, no material or criminal proceedings are recorded against Pandeli Majko,” SPAK stated. While the reaction clears the air on the accusations against Majko, it also raises questions about SPAK’s inconsistent behavior vis-à-vis such allegations.
