2023 Census results published: Albania’s population at 2.4 million

The Albanian Institute of Statistics has released the 2023 Census results, revealing that Albania’s population currently stands at 2.4 million.
Context
The Census was a key requirement for opening negotiations and will provide essential statistics for the European Statistical System. This data is crucial for measuring sustainable development and will be integrated into official statistics, serving as a common framework for progress in Europe and providing valuable data for policymaking and national strategies.
The Census recorded 2,402,113 inhabitants in 755,950 families, with an average of 3.2 members per family, living in 1,082,529 dwellings.
The new data show a significant population decline compared to the 2011 Census, which reported 2,831,741 inhabitants. In 2001, the population was 3,069,275.
Following these results, efforts will continue to provide detailed information at district, municipal, and smaller geographical levels. Thematic analyses and studies will be conducted in various fields.
The 2023 Census introduced innovations such as the use of information technology in data collection, a digitized geospatial system, real-time monitoring of data collection progress and quality, and a broader range of collected information. The methodology, definitions, and concepts followed recommendations from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the 2020 census round and European Union regulations.
This is the 12th Census in Albania’s 100-year history of censuses and since the establishment of its first official statistics office.
