Interior Minister presents new police chiefs for key northern districts amidst debate on crime
Interior Minister Ervin Hoxha introduced on Tuesday the newly appointed police chiefs for Shkodër and Lezhë, two key norther districts. He emphasized the need for strong action against organized crime and the prevention of severe criminal incidents. During the announcement, Hoxha stressed the urgency of creating a secure environment and the necessity for close collaboration with local communities to curb crime. In Shkodra in particular there are serious concerns about organized crime activity. Furthermore, the appointments come in the context of the murder of a 14-year-old pupil in the heart of Tirana has caused heated political debates on security.
Why is this important: Just two weeks ago, Shkodra witnessed a tragic incident that left four people dead, including two innocent passersby. The victims included two young men, one the son of a local politician and the other the brother of a high-profile fugitive. They were ambushed by unidentified assailants, and the gunfire caused their car to collide with a motorcycle carrying a married couple, who also lost their lives. This incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with demands for decisive action against criminal gangs. The appointment of new police leadership signals a commitment to addressing these concerns.
Context: Minister Hoxha highlighted the urgency of strengthening operations to tackle criminal groups. “The challenge is clear: organized crime,” he stated, noting that the new Shkodër police chief, Mr. Lleshaj, has a duty to intensify efforts and strengthen coordination among law enforcement units. For the first time, police chiefs and the general police director have been selected through a competitive process, aimed at boosting efficiency and professionalism. Meanwhile, the opposition has criticized the government’s handling of crime, staging a protest in Shkodër and demanding more effective measures.
