Bank of Albania to circulate new 100 lek coins starting November 15
The Bank of Albania announced that, beginning November 15, new 100 lek coins – approximately 1 Euro – with legal tender status, minted in 2023, will be put into circulation.
Context: According to the Central Bank, the new coins will have the same composition, appearance, dimensions, and weight as the most recent edition of the 100 lek coin. The main difference lies in the year of minting, which will be marked as “2023,” and in the corrected spelling of the words “Lekë,” “Mbretëresha,” (Queen) and “Shqipërisë” (of Albania) on the coin’s surface.
These coins will be used as a parallel means of payment alongside existing 100 lek coins minted in previous years. The updated spelling and minting date make them distinguishable from earlier versions.
What’s next: Following the release of the new 100 lek coins on November 15, the Bank of Albania will continue to manage and oversee currency distribution. These coins will circulate concurrently with older versions, while the Bank remains vigilant in updating and preserving the national currency’s characteristics.
