Albanian Parliament Speaker Elisa Spiropali attends Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform in Riga
Elisa Spiropali, Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, participated in the Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform in Riga, Latvia, organized by the Latvian and Ukrainian parliaments. This important gathering brings together parliamentary leaders from member countries of the Crimea Platform.
Why is this important: In her plenary address, Spiropali underscored the collective responsibility of nations to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.
She stated, “Our meeting today contributes to European and global security, showcasing our determination to achieve this through a just peace. Crimea marks the beginning of the Russian occupation, and the Crimea Platform symbolizes our united effort to counter Russia’s attempts to undermine the international rules-based order.”
Spiropali reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, asserting, “Albania stands as a reliable partner in Ukraine’s defense.”
She highlighted that Albania was among the first countries to impose sanctions on Russia and provide military aid to Ukraine. Notable events in support of Ukraine have included the Southeast European Countries Summit in Tirana in February 2024, attended by President Zelensky, along with high-level conferences in Berlin and Switzerland. Spiropali also noted Albania’s role as a co-sponsor with the U.S. during its non-permanent membership on the UN Security Council from 2022 to 2023.
Additionally, during the summit, Spiropali met with Bärbel Bas, President of the German Bundestag, and Szymon Franciszek Hołownia, Speaker of the Polish Parliament. They reaffirmed the robust political dialogue and strong relations between Albania and Germany, particularly emphasizing their collaborative efforts under the Berlin Process to promote regional economic integration.
Spiropali highlighted the deep collaboration between the Albanian Parliament and the Bundestag on judicial reform and other democratizing initiatives, noting the frequent exchanges of visits across all levels.
Furthermore, she expressed a commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Poland, focusing on defense, infrastructure, and tourism. She thanked Poland and the Visegrad countries for their support of Albania’s EU integration and regional cooperation in the Western Balkans. The discussions also included ongoing support for Ukraine and the safeguarding of freedom and peace.
