KFOR dismisses concerns raised by Kosovo PM over Serb troop movements near Kosovo border
KFOR, NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, has dismissed concerns raised by Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, over the presence of Serbian troops near the Kosovo border. Kurti took to social media over the weekend, accusing Serbia of provocative military actions after Serbian forces reportedly moved within 50 meters of the border near Kamenica. However, KFOR clarified that the Serbian patrol was routine and posed no threat to the region’s security.
Why is this important: On Saturday night, Kurti accused Serbia of escalating the situation by moving troops dangerously close to Kosovo’s border. “Serbia provoked once again, bringing its troops within 50 meters of our border,” Kurti said, adding that Kosovo’s security forces immediately detected the movement. Kurti assured the public that Kosovo’s security forces are fully prepared to respond to any threat, claiming the country has made significant investments in intelligence, security, and defense. However, KFOR explained that the troop movement was part of a regular patrol, planned and communicated in advance. The Kosovo Police were also informed, ensuring there was no cause for immediate concern.
KFOR’s response: KFOR, which has been overseeing the security situation in Kosovo since the 1999 conflict, explained that the Serbian Armed Forces had informed them ahead of time about the patrol along the border. The Kosovo Police were also made aware, as part of regular communication to ensure no misunderstandings. According to KFOR, the patrol did not change the overall security conditions in the area.
KFOR emphasized that it regularly monitors the situation along the Kosovo-Serbia border and noted that this specific patrol was routine, without any signs of escalation. The NATO mission continues to operate under the authority of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, ensuring peace and stability in the region. They underscored the importance of continued coordination between all parties involved to prevent any unnecessary tensions.
KFOR maintains a visible presence throughout Kosovo and remains committed to its mandate of providing a secure environment for all citizens. The mission stressed that their role is to support peace and that any security concerns are handled through constant dialogue with both Kosovo and Serbian officials. The overall security situation, according to KFOR, remains stable.
