Socialist Party presents plans for Diaspora to Albanians in Italy

Albanians living in Italy recently met with Minister of State Taulant Balla, the political leader for the diaspora of the Socialists, to hear about the Socialist Party’s plans and ideas for the diaspora. The meeting, held in Rome, gathered hundreds of Albanians who have lived and worked in Italy for years.

Why is this important: In the next parliamentary elections, for the first time, Albanians in the diaspora will be able to vote by mail from the countries where they reside. Although the elections will take place in May, the ruling Socialist majority—seeking a fourth term—has already started engaging with the diaspora.

Context: The Socialist Party’s outreach to the diaspora began in May with a meeting in Athens, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama. Branded Proud of Albania, similar events were held in Milan. Greece and Italy host the largest portion of the Albanian diaspora, many of whom moved there after the fall of communism in the 1990s. The tour which was paused for unrelated reasons, will resume, with a stop in New York on October 26.
