The city of Vlora is recovering after significant flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Roads are now passable, and clean-up operations are underway, with local authorities and the military working together to restore normality.

Context: Two days after torrential rains led to severe flooding in Vlora, the city is gradually returning to normal. The municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, has been actively working to clean up debris, remove water from underground garages, and distribute aid to affected families.

Local officials reported that all roads are now clear for both vehicles and pedestrians. While there are still areas needing attention, including underground garages and some roads clogged with debris, significant progress has been made. According to Vlora’s mayor, Ermal Dredha, the municipality’s structures have been working tirelessly to address the aftermath of the downpours.

Ongoing efforts and aid distribution: The Ministry of Defense has sent 31 military personnel, 10 transport vehicles, and 8 water pumps of various capacities to assist with the clean-up. In collaboration with the State Reserves, 4.5 tons of food supplies, 1.5 tons of water, and 200 liters of detergent have been provided to residents affected by the flooding.

In addition, Mayor Dredha confirmed in an interview with News24 that the city has received support from other municipalities, including Tirana, Shkodra, Durrës, Berat, and Fier. This solidarity has been crucial in bringing the situation under control swiftly.

Next steps: As the city transitions back to normal, local officials continue to assess the damage to homes, businesses, schools, and state buildings. The Municipality, along with dedicated teams, will continue to work on the ground to provide financial assistance to affected citizens, ensuring that their lives return to normal as soon as possible.

The mayor stressed the importance of long-term recovery efforts, emphasizing that, despite the unprecedented intensity of the rainfall—180 mm in just two hours—the city’s resilience and collective effort will see Vlora restored quickly.
