Kosovo Defense Minister warns of potential armed group attacks backed by Serbia

Kosovo’s Defense Minister, Ejup Maqedonci, has warned of potential terrorist attacks by armed groups supported by structures in Serbia. He highlighted the ongoing threat posed by these groups, similar to the 2023 Banjskë attack, led by Milan Radoičić, which aimed to destabilize Kosovo for political motives.

Why is this important

The warning underscores rising tensions in the Balkans amid stalled dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia and highlights the fragile peace between Kosovo and Serbia.

Context

Maqedonci stated that armed groups like the one led by Radoičić are free in Serbia, receiving training and conducting activities that pose a threat to Kosovo’s security. He pointed to Serbia’s aggressive military posture, with 48 military bases near the Kosovo border and the purchase of weapons from Russia, China, and Iran. These actions are viewed as a direct threat not just to Kosovo but to the entire Balkans region.

Radoičić, a notorious Kosovo Serb businessman and politician led the 2023 Banjskë attack, where armed groups attacked Kosovo police forces killing one, before suffering losses and retreating to Serbia. He has also been implicated in various illegal activities, including smuggling and organized crime, and is seen by Kosovo authorities as a significant threat to national security.

Despite being wanted by Kosovo authorities for the attack, Radoičić continues to reside in Serbia, where he is believed to receive protection and support from influential political and security networks.

Kosovo has responded by bolstering its defenses, with increased police presence in northern municipalities and enhanced cooperation with NATO forces, including the deployment of additional KFOR troops along the border. Maqedonci emphasized that while the risk of similar attacks has been reduced due to these measures, the presence of such groups in Serbia remains a significant threat.
