Albania is set to host the British Cultural Week from September 16-22, offering a diverse array of events, including conferences, festivals, workshops, and discussions centered on electronic music and various cultural topics.

This week-long celebration aims to underscore the cultural ties between Albania and the United Kingdom, highlighting the significance of such cultural exchanges in promoting innovation and creativity.

The British Cultural Week will commence on the evening of September 16 with a performance titled “BED – In Memory of Derek Jarman” at the Naan Gallery in Tirana. The piece, created by Manchester artist Jez Dolan, presents a contemporary interpretation reflecting the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community in 2024. The performance will feature changing pairs engaged in quiet discussions, reading, or sleeping at 45-60 minute intervals.

Film enthusiasts will have the chance to attend a masterclass on September 17, led by the renowned director Mike Figgis. This masterclass will offer valuable insights into modern filmmaking techniques and foster discussions aimed at advancing the Albanian film industry.

On September 18, experts from the UK, Sweden, and Albania will convene to discuss best practices in artist status legislation. The following day, September 19, will be dedicated to open discussions about visual arts.

Technology will also be prominently featured, with young people from the northern city of Has demonstrating the skills they have acquired through the Alternative Pathways project. Additionally, electronic music aficionados can anticipate an electrifying event on September 20 after 11:00 PM at Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, showcasing artists from both the UK and Albania.

The week will culminate with the “EA Festival – Freedom and Transformation,” curated by academic and author Lea Ypi, taking place in Tirana and Durrës on September 21 and 22. The festival will address a wide range of topics, from art and literature to renewable agriculture and hallucinogenic substances. The EA Festival will collaborate with prominent cultural organizations such as The Food Museum, Jockey Club Rooms, Gainsborough’s House, Battersea Power Station, and the Essex Book Festival.
