For the first time, on September 14th, Pogradec will host the Koran Fish Festival, a celebration dedicated to the unique fish species found in Lake Ohrid, located in the southeastern region of Albania, on the border with North Macedonia.

The festival, announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama, will focus on the cultural and natural significance of the Lake Ohrid trout, known in Albanian as koran. The species is exclusive to Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. Lake Ohrid was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural importance. It is home to over 200 endemic species, including the koran, making it a vital ecological region in Europe.

The koran is not only valued for its unique flavor, distinct from other wild fish species, but also for its nutritional benefits. This fish plays a significant role in local culture and cuisine, contributing to the identity of the Pogradec region.

The festival will feature artistic programs and activities, aimed at attracting tourists and raising awareness about the ecological importance of Lake Ohrid. It will also showcase Pogradec’s offerings, from its natural beauty to its rich cultural heritage.
