Albanian Government increases salaries for local government employees

The Minister of State for Local Governance, Arbjan Mazniku announced a significant salary increase for local government employees, with minimum and maximum salaries set to rise between 40% and 120%. The reform aligns local government salaries with those in the central administration.

Why is this significant

The salary reform is a critical step in improving the efficiency and quality of local government services in Albania.

Context

Minister Mazniku highlighted the importance of the salary reform for local authorities. “The reform standardizes job classification with the central administration, significantly increasing salaries,” he adding that professionals would receive the same pay regardless of the size of the municipality in which they work.

Additionally, the minister noted that the reorganization of municipal structures would lead to higher-quality services for citizens. “Municipal staffs will be restructured to provide better and more efficient services to the public,” Mazniku said.

As part of the reform, years of service will now be calculated in the same way as for employees of the central administration. This change is expected to unify the payment structure across all municipalities, making it easier to attract professionals from the market and contributing to more effective local governance.

The government approved the salary increase for local government employees on August 1, reflecting its commitment to improving public administration and enhancing the quality of services delivered to Albanian citizens.
