Albania to establish Jewish Museum in Vlora to honor WWII heroes

The stories of Albanians who saved Jewish lives during the dark years of the Holocaust will soon have a dedicated place of remembrance with the establishment of the Albanian Jewish Museum.

Why is this important

Albanians are proud of the fact that their country was the only Nazi-occupied country with more Jews after WWII than before. Almost all native Jews survived the Holocaust, and several thousand Jewish refugees were sheltered and protected from Nazi persecution. The museum in Vlora will showcase this unique story, dedicated to the peaceful coexistence of Jews and Albanians over time. It is expected to become a cultural magnet for the historic area of Vlora.

Supported by the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), the museum is conceived as a contemporary space that will highlight a unique history of coexistence, trust, and hope between Albanians and Jews, particularly during World War II.

The AADF has announced the launch of the bidding process for the construction of the Albanian Jewish Museum in Vlora, inviting qualified companies to submit their proposals. According to AADF, this modern project is designed to complement the historic center of the city.

According to AADF, the establishment of this museum will set a new standard for museums in Albania, supporting the creation of a contemporary institution. This museum will be the only one of its kind in Albania and the region in terms of its mission, concept, architecture, management, governance, exhibition model, storytelling of history, partnerships, and community engagement.
