Government approves new salary increases for local government employees starting September 1

The salary increases that Albanian Times reported on July 29 were approved during today’s meeting of the Council of Ministers and will be applied from September 1.

Why is this important

Local government employees will see a significant increase in their salaries in alignment with the Government’s two-year plan to raise the average salary to €900.

Context

Salaries for local government officials will be standardized across the country based on approved pay grades. This means that professionals such as architects, engineers, lawyers, and economists will receive comparable pay for similar work, regardless of whether they work in a large municipality or a small one. Additionally, the method for calculating seniority for local administration employees will be unified with that of the central administration.

The salary increases by municipality size are as follows:

  • In municipalities with a small population, civil servants will see an average salary increase of 90% (ranging from 20% to 123%) above their current wages.
  • In medium-sized municipalities, civil servants will experience an average salary increase of 80% (ranging from 20% to 100%).
  • In large municipalities, the average salary increase for civil servants will be 60% (ranging from 18% to 103%) higher than their current pay.

The greatest benefit from these increases will be seen in small and medium-sized municipalities, which will receive the highest salary adjustments and have previously faced more pronounced shortages of human resources.
