Valiev and Abakarov honored after medal wins at 2025 European Wrestling Championships
Albania’s wrestling federation has officially honored Chermen Valiev and Zelimkhan Abakarov, following their medal-winning performances at the 2025 European Wrestling Championships. Valiev claimed gold, while Abakarov secured bronze, reaffirming Albania’s growing reputation on the continental stage.
Why is this important: Valiev’s gold is Albania’s first European title in wrestling, adding to his Olympic bronze. Abakarov, a former world champion, returned to the podium, marking an important step in his comeback. Abakarov expressed motivation heading into the world championships.
“I’m happy to be back on the international medal stage. It’s a result that pushes me forward. I was the world champion for Albania in 2022 — and I want to be again.”
What else: The two athletes were honored during the Albanian Cup held in Tirana, where 70 wrestlers competed. Federation president Sahit Prizreni led the ceremony, calling the moment a celebration not just of present success, but of the future of Albanian wrestling.
